These new series of Civic Education for Senior Secondary Schools, Books 1-3, are based on the new curriculum as developed by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC). This new curriculum seeks to reposition the study of Civic Education in a rapidly changing world so that students are better equipped to become responsible and disciplined members of their societies.
Generally, answers to these implicit questions are provided by drawing examples from recent and past Nigerian history. But always, the objective is to produce young students into exploring their immediate environment and drawing the right conclusions therefrom.
To ensure that students take away the most from the series, in chapter after chapter, broad issues are examined and defined, with concrete examples drawn from the Nigerian society to drive the points home. Whether it is the broad theme of Social Values or Human Rights or even the Rule of Law, each chapter starts with a definition, followed by an examination of the various dimensions of the issues being discussed. At the end of each chapter, a summary of what ought to have been learnt is stated, followed by a number of revision questions.
In preparing the series, our collective experience as serving school and college teachers came into play. The special training seminar where modalities for manuscript preparation were outlined, style of writing defined and the essence of focusing primarily on the Nigerian experience and background presented, came in quite handy.
